Here's the deal, the longer you've been away from the gym and lifting weights, the harder it can be to get into it. That time away can make it difficult for not only your body to get use to the training, but also for your mind to want to push you there.
As you get a little older your hormones change and there is a greater reduction in testosterone, which shifts body composition by reducing muscle and increasing fat tissue. The less muscle your body has, the harder strength is to gain and maintain.
This doesn't mean you can't get strong, burn fat, gain muscle and naturally increase testosterone in your body again.
The problem is that most strength training and nutrition plans demand too much of you and don't allow your body to adapt before increasing the demands. Then you go to work dragging your feet because you're tired and put the body into an exhausted, stressed out state.
This stress elevates a hormone called "cortisol", which reduces testosterone significantly in your body. Testosterone is a highly anabolic hormone that is elevated with proper training, good nutrition and recovery. Stress however, works the opposite and is highly catabolic meaning it breaks muscle tissue down.
They work along side each other and when one hormone us up, the other must come down.
Then you give up and wait another 6 months to try again...this throws your hormones out of balance making each new attempt to get strong and jacked harder and harder for your body to adapt to.
